PCR Biotechnology Unit

Preparation Information:

Template model – www.teachengineering .org

Detailed information/examples – http://www.teachengineering.org/submit_curricula.php

Unit title:

Biotechnology

Grade level:

Designed for grade 9; applicable for 9-12.

Summary:

An overview of biotechnology concentrating on Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) techniques to be introduced and non-PCR techniques discussed throughout the semester. Also emphasizing their relation to biology today and culminating in a often used modern day molecular biology technique PCR.

Molecular Biology

Connection:

Multiple molecular biology techniques are discussed and evaluated as to their purpose and real world applications (putting the techniques into situations that the students would recognize such as those seen in television crime dramas). A molecular biology technique that is extremely common to laboratories across the nation as well as in the collegiate classroom would be done by the students.

Key Words: PCR, Gel Electrophoresis, pipetting

Subject area:

Biology

Educational Standards:

Georgia Science: sb1 b, c; sb2 a, b, c, d, e, f

Related Activities

1.  PCR

2.  Gel Electrophoresis

Time required:

3 (90min) class periods

Unit Assessment

In addition to the activity assessments a student group oral presentation was done during one class period following the PCR and gel activities. The students were asked to present a molecular technique either talked about during the unit or one that they had found in their books. Most of the techniques talked about were also covered in the books so they worked well as source material. The students were asked to present the technique, the protocol, and underlying concepts of the protocol, as well as the relevance of the technique to biology and the world today.
